A Smithsonian Magazine article titled “ Native Americans Spread Horses Through the West Earlier Than Thought ” (2023) has been circulating in Mormon spaces as supposed proof that horses existed in the Americas during Book of Mormon times. The article summarizes a legitimate scientific study published in Science titled “ Early Dispersal of Domestic Horses Into the Great Plains and Northern Rockies .” (2023) But when you read what the researchers actually found, it’s clear this does not support the Book of Mormon’s claims at all. What the Study Actually Found The research team, led by William Timothy T. Taylor, analyzed horse remains found across the Great Plains and northern Rockies. Using radiocarbon dating, DNA sequencing, and isotopic analysis, they discovered that the animals were of Spanish origin. SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced a partnership with La-Z-Boy to provide more comfortable seating in Relief Society rooms, aiming to create a more welcoming and supportive environment for women’s meetings.
“For years, we've heard from members that the seating in Relief Society rooms was uncomfortable and distracting,” said Elder Craig L. Nielsen of the Church’s Facilities Department. “We recognize the important role that Relief Society plays in the spiritual and social lives of our members, and we want to ensure that these meetings are as comfortable and inviting as possible.”
The new seating will feature padded cushions with durable, stain-resistant fabric and ergonomic back support. Each chair will also have a slight reclining function to provide additional comfort during longer lessons and discussions. The fabric will be selected in soft, neutral tones to match the existing décor in Church buildings.
“This upgrade reflects the Church’s commitment to supporting the needs of Relief Society sisters,” Nielsen said. “We want them to feel comfortable and focused during their meetings without the distraction of uncomfortable seating.”
In contrast, seating for the Elders Quorum will remain unchanged, with the standard metal folding chairs still in use. When asked about this decision, Nielsen explained that the choice was intentional.
“There’s value in maintaining a sense of humility and simplicity in priesthood meetings,” Nielsen said. “We believe that the metal chairs reinforce a spirit of endurance and focus.”
The first phase of the rollout will begin with select Relief Society rooms in Utah, with a broader expansion planned based on member feedback.
“We believe this change will make a meaningful difference in the Relief Society experience,” Nielsen said. “Our goal is to create an environment where sisters feel valued, supported, and spiritually uplifted.”
